Earlier today Labour’s Deputy Mayor of London Jules Pipe granted planning permission to the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) to go ahead with their massive expansion plans.
Official City Hall reports published last week had already recommended the approval of the project. We feel that is wrong. The approval places far too much weight on the representations made by the AELTC and does not understand the very real concerns of thousands of local residents who have objected.
Throughout the process we have objected to the sheer scale of what Wimbledon has put forward. This includes:
- An 8,000-seat show court, 28 m high the equivalent of a 10-storey tower block.
- 38 extra courts.
- 10 more buildings on the parkland.
- 9km of roads and paths.
- Construction will take years and mean thousands of extra trucks on local residential roads.
The attitude of the club has prevented any kind of meaningful discussion or any attempt at reaching a compromise.
What happens next?
Angela Rayner MP as the Secretary of State for Local Government can ‘call in’ the application and determine it herself. In doing so she could reverse the decision made by Labour run City Hall. We would urge you to show your support for that by signing our petition
